2-16 2010 MN Finn Weekend approaches under perfect conditions

As the weekend approaches Minnesota Finlandia board members are confident of great conditions after a terrific season of snowfall and a stable of grooming equipment and helpful volunteers that is the envy of any ski club in the Midwest. With the steady snowfall we have gone out in pairs grooming every week since the holidays, sometimes twice in one week. With the extra help we’ve had lots of fun sharing tips and grooming tradecraft, as well as all of us actually skiing more and enjoying the amazing setting of Buena Vista. Visitors and local skiers have been treated to race day conditions on several weekends and the shops and rental programs have done steady business as word gets out of what a great season it’s been. Thanks to the long term vision and hard work of the Bemidji Cross Country Ski Club, a new fleet of on-site grooming equipment has been put into service and new energy has been infused into the stewardship of trails and ski culture in Bemidji. The Sunday Ski School had a great run with adult classes and 30-40 kids attending each weekend. Topping off the year is the mighty Finlandia, a challenging course with a kind of western flavor all its own, with wide open skies and the historic logging camp as background. Skiers describe this race as their favorite because of the beautiful scenic course, enthusiastic volunteers and warm friendly gathering at the Hall of Fame after their race is completed. Buena Vista is our little slice of mountain town culture in the midwest, whether taking the kids up the bunny hill watching horses pull a logging sled, or enjoying the alpenglow sunset from the top of sunnyside heading home from an evening ski workout. The weekend promises steady temps in the low 20s, and the snow has been fantastic for grooming out a full course with all the trimmings. If you love fast cruising on a beautifully prepared course, treat yourself to the race that was declared Best Grooming in 2007 and Best Event in 2008 by the Skinny Ski series participants, the Minnesota Finlandia !
